π Small Changes, Safer Homes
October is Safety Awareness Month, making it a great time to look around the home and consider a few simple ways to reduce the risk of falls while supporting independence.
Falls can have a big impact on confidence and mobility, but many everyday risks can be reduced with small changes.
π Take a quick look around your home
Keep pathways clear
Move cords, shoes, bags and clutter out of walkways.
Watch those rugs!
Secure loose mats or consider removing them altogether.
Light the way
Make sure hallways, stairs, bathrooms and bedrooms are well lit, particularly at night. A night light near the bed can be helpful.
Keep things within easy reach
Avoid standing on chairs or stools to reach high cupboards. If something is difficult to reach, ask for help.
Make the bathroom safer
Wet floors can be slippery. Consider non-slip surfaces and appropriate safety equipment where recommended.
π Look after your feet
Wear well-fitting, supportive footwear with a secure fastening and non-slip sole. Avoid walking around in loose slippers or socks.
πͺ Keep moving
Staying active helps maintain strength, balance, flexibility and confidence. Walking, gardening and other activities you enjoy can all help keep you moving. Speak with your doctor or health professional about activities that are right for you.
π Check your health
Some medications, changes in vision or feeling dizzy or unsteady can increase your risk of falling. Speak with your doctor or pharmacist if you have concerns, and keep up with regular eye and hearing checks. Never stop taking medication without medical advice.
π€ Independence doesn't mean doing everything alone
Knowing when to ask for help is part of staying independent. Your Home Care team can work with you to identify potential risks, discuss ways to make everyday activities safer and connect you with appropriate health professionals or supports when needed.
Safety isn't about taking away your independence β it's about helping you keep it.

β Is there something I could change or ask for help with?
π‘ Remember: A fall isn't simply "part of getting older." Small changes to your home, health and daily routines can make a big difference.
