The Ripple Effect – Supporting Taree's Education Recovery
As the saying goes, “It takes a village to raise a child” — and in June 2025, this sentiment was powerfully extended to supporting businesses and community-based programs during times of crisis.
Following the catastrophic flooding in Taree and surrounding areas, Kurri Kurri Community Services (KKCS) initiated a call for support on behalf of a fellow educational initiative: the Taree Study Hub, which had been severely impacted.
The Impact
The Taree Study Hub, a two-level facility dedicated to providing free academic and wellbeing support to vulnerable students, was devastated by the floods. Both floors suffered extensive damage. Walls and floors had to be stripped in preparation for rebuilding. Critically, the Hub lost over 45 desks and 60 chairs for students (and everything else between), creating a major disruption to its mission of offering a safe, supportive, and functional learning environment.
At KKCS, we understand firsthand the transformative role that Study Hubs play. As operators of our own Hub, we witness daily the importance of these spaces — especially for students who may not otherwise have access to tertiary education opportunities. These Hubs offer not only a quiet, equipped place to study but also emotional and academic support critical to success.
The Call for Support
Given the extent of damage and knowing local Taree businesses were also grappling with flood impacts, KKCS reached out beyond the immediate area — into the Hunter Region — appealing to government agencies and businesses that may have surplus office furniture or equipment. We specifically asked for donations of:
Office desks and tables, general office furniture and kitchen utilities
IT equipment
The Response
The response was nothing short of extraordinary. The generosity and community spirit displayed by the Hunter Region was inspiring. Donations included:
Hunter Water – office furniture, kitchen wares
New Era – IT equipment
NSW Department of Planning, Industry and Environment (DPIE) – extensive office equipment
These contributions are helping re-establish the Taree Study Hub as a place where students can once again thrive.
Conclusion
This highlights the power of regional collaboration and shared community values. In times of crisis, when one part of the village stumbles, others step forward to lend a hand. Through this ripple effect, the collective support not only restores infrastructure — it rebuilds futures. Taree Study Hub were able to re-open its doors within 4 weeks.
