KKCS has a rich history of supporting local youth. Our youth programs include the Kurri Youth Support Program (previously Kurri Youth Centre) which caters to young people in the 12-18 age range and the Cessnock Community and Youth Development Project that has a focus on young people aged 12-25 years and the services who work with them.

Kurri Youth Support

KYC has been operating since 1993. The service provides support to young people in the Kurri Kurri and surrounding area and who are aged 12-18.

Services available include:

  • Case management
  • Counselling
  • In-school programs
  • Advice and referrals
  • General support

Case Management/Counselling: is available to those requiring one-on-one support with any issue. It incorporates an assessment of current needs, working with other organisations as required, setting case plans, and both supporting and empowering the client to overcome barriers.

Advice & Referrals: we can provide advice and referrals for young people needing further support. This can include but is not limited to referrals for mental and other health issues, housing, and employment support purposes.

Cessnock Community & Youth Development Project

The Cessnock Community and Youth Development project (CYDP) is designed to support and resource young people and the network of community services working with young people in the Cessnock LGA. CYDP positions are funded to instigate initiatives and build community capacity with a focus on young people in a particular LGA.

The Cessnock CYDP, based at Kurri Kurri Community Services (KKCS), proactively assists with new program development and local infrastructure. The position aims to maintain local youth services networks, while increasing the development and implementation of appropriate youth sector training and information up-dates.

Project Activities

  • Representing Cessnock Youth Services and young people on a regional level
  • Providing awareness and understanding of current issues faced by young people
  • Assisting young people in voicing their own opinions
  • Identifying the needs of young people and facilitating the development and coordination of resources to support them
  • Advocating and lobbying on behalf of young people to ensure their needs are considered in the development of   programs and policies. School-based programs

  • Cessnock Youth Entertainment Committee
  • Youth events and holiday activities
  • School welfare planning/programs
  • The annual Regional Youth Development Officers Network (RYDON) conference

Cessnock Youth Interagency

This project coordinates and facilitates youth interagency meetings in the Cessnock LGA to unite and strengthen the support system between youth and community services. These meetings give youth and community workers the opportunity to develop partnerships, collaborate and info-share in ways that better help to meet the needs of young people. Kurri Kurri Community Services KKCS Rydon

KKCC’s CYDP is the Chairperson of the Regional Youth Development Officers Network (RYDON). RYDON is a network of Youth Development Officers from the Cessnock, Dungog, Gloucester, Lake Macquarie, Maitland, Newcastle and Upper Hunter Local Government Areas. RYDON undertake a range of activities including advocacy, youth sector development and youth engagement.
